Kobe City enacted the Public Records Management Ordinance in April 2026. This legislation established unified rules for managing public records, creating a highly transparent management system. In June of the same year, the Kobe City Archives opened as a facility dedicated to ensuring that historically significant public records accumulated over time are properly cataloged and preserved. It also serves as a hub for supporting research and facilitating public access of these records.
The Kobe City Archives is a facility tasked with preserving and utilizing the many valuable historical and cultural materials concerning the city that were collected during the compilation of Kobe City History, as well as specific historical documents transferred to its custody. It catalogs public documents, photographs, publications, historical materials, and other items into 15 categories and makes them available to the public.
The Kobe City Archives has established a system that allows users to view catalogs, images, and other data related to its collection online, and is actively working to register and publish materials. It has also launched a website that introduces the history of Kobe using materials from its collection.
