Manhole Card is a card-style leaflet made by a municipality featuring its original manhole cover design, for the purpose of deepening interest in the sewerage system.
Like baseball cards, "Manholes cards", featuring pictures of manhole covers with unique local designs. A card face is a photo of a manhole covered with its geographic coordinates.
They are distributed to visitors in the municipality where the manhole covers are shown, including sewage treatment facilities and tourist information centers.
The cards were planned by 'Gesuido Koho [Sewage Publicity] Platform (GKP)’, which was made up of officials from the ministry and the Japan Sewage Works Association.
The number of manholes cards is growing, and it reached 605 of 502 municipalities (December 14, 2019). Now, these cards are very popular in Japan.
Kobe City started to treat our original manhole card, which is as one of the first series of 30 cards, from April 1, 2016.
They are available for free in Higashinada Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP).
You can get this card —one card per person in principle— by visiting Higashinada WWTP.
