Geographical features

Geographical featuresNada ward is located in the eastern part of Kobe city, Hyogo prefecture, and has the area of 31.4 Km2. The ward faces Osaka Gulf in the south, and is surrounded in the north by beautiful Mt. Rokko and Mt.Maya which are beloved by Kobe citizens. The ward is in the contact with Higashinada ward in the east through the Ishiyagawa river, with Kita ward in the north, and with Chuo ward in the west through Oji Zoo or in the vicinity of Iwaya. The Nada ward has the geographical features such as complex alluvial fans which were formed in steep slopes of Mt. Rokko. Three different rivers run from the upland-north to downland-south as follows: the Saigo, Toga and Ishiya which are arraged from the west to the east.
Three different travel facilities such as the Hankyu, Hanshin, and JR line cross three rivers and run from the west to the East.
Gokaizan of Rokkosan-cho is 900.7 m above sea level. The sea level decrease gradually with the advance of the south direction. The lowest area of downland, Midorocho, is -0.2m above sea level.
In this connection, although Mt. Rokko is very famous to be the highest (931.1 m) in Kobe city, it belongs to both Higashinada and Kita ward.

History and ChangesAccording to the administration of municipality organization at April, the 22nd of Meiji era, a large number of small villages, which lay in the Nada ward, were unified into three villages : Rokko village (in the east of Nada ward), Togano village (in the west of the ward), and Togahama village (in the west of the ward). Afterwards, theTogano village made a change in the name into Nishinada village while the Togahama village into Saigo town. The two villages and a town which belonged to Muko county in those days were newly incorporated into Kobe city at the April of the 4th of Showa era. Nada ward was born after the administration of ward organization at the September of 6th of Showa era. Although the name of Nada appears to come from the meaning of "Nada no kiippon", it has remained unclear when or how the name is used. The meaning of Nada indicates "the sea of going dangerous sailing because of making big waves" according to the dictionary. The "Nada" which is used commonly in all parts of the country indicates the meaning of the sea-facing landscape. However, the facing seas are said to be characteritics of calm or fierceness. The Setouchi sea facing Nada ward is said to be peaceful comparatively.

MarigoldSymbol flowers are established in each of the wards by executing "Flower City Kobe Campaign" at the 61st of Showa era. The flower, Marigold, was chosen by the election of citizen participants of Nada ward municipal administration round-table conference. Since that time, Marigold is popular with the citizens of Nada ward and others. Marigold is an oxeye of the Mexican-originated annual plants: the height is from 30 to 40 cm and the diameter is about 3 cm. Marigold plants are categorized into two different ones: the first is French Marigoldwith the height of 25 ~40 cm, and the second is a big flower, African Marigold, with the height of 50~90 cm and the diameter of 6~10 cm. The sowing time is from April to August and blossom stage is from May to October.
