Dear Friends and Citizens of Kobe:
When news of the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake reached Seattle, the attention of the entire city turned to concern for hte victims of this great the tragedy. Many of our citizens expressed Many sympathies by visiting the Seattle Center to personally ring the Kobe Bell in memory of the thousands of people who lost their lives. We quickly organized a task force to help cordinate a relief effort. Although the task force was able to assist in many ways, we wish we could have done more to help in that time of tragic devastation.
During the 38 years that the citizens of Seattle have enjoyed a sister city relationship with Kobe, many of us have had the opportunity to visit your beautiful city and enjoy your warm friendship and kind hospitality. We have admired your determination and community spirit, which have made Kobe a world-renowned city. I'm certain these same personal assets will lead to a reconstructed Kobe that will be an even better city in the future.
As the first anniversary of the tragic earthquake approaches, I understand that you have made great progress in roads, bridges, buildings and homes. We send our congratulations for progress beyond expectations, and wish continued success in your reconstruction efforts.
Sincerely,
Norman B. Rice
Mayor of Seattle
