CITY OF PHILADELPHIA

Message from Philadelphia.Dear Mayor Sasayama:

On behalf of the Citizens of Philadelphia, I am pleased to send you greetings.

Since 1986, Philadelphia and Kobe have been Partner Cities. Through this important relationship, we have developed a special bond of friendship.

Accordingly, it was with great sadness that the citizens of Philadelphia listened to the news about the massive deavastation to Kobe caused by the earthquake that struck Kobe on January 17, 1995 and the many aftershocks. We were dismayed by the magnitude of the quake and its widespread, heavy damage that resulted in deaths and injuries to thousands of Kobe's citizens.

On the occasion of the one-year anniversary of the earthquake, we commend your great efforts of reconstruction. While the personal suffering and deaths will never be forgotten, we salute the courage and the resiliency of the people of Kobe.

The concern and sympathy of the citizens of Philadelphia remains steadfast.

You continue to be in our thoughts and prayers.

Sincerely,

EDWARD G. RENDELL
