The Kobe Medical Industry Development Project
|

|
In aiming towards
restoration after the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, the Kobe Medical
Industry Development Project has been promoted by the City of Kobe
since 1998. This project is designed to bring medical industry
businesses into Port Island 2nd Stage, on reclaimed land
just offshore of the Port of Kobe, and to create a research and
development hub for advanced medical technologies in Kobe.
With the Institute of Biomedical Research and Innovation (IBRI) as the
core facility, other major bases have begun operations including the Kobe
Translational Research Informatics Center (TRI), the Kobe Business Support
Center for Biomedical Research Activities (BMA), and the Kobe Biotechnology
Research and Human Resource Development Center/Kobe University Incubation
Center. The world’s highest level of research institutes and enterprises
involved in reproductive medicine and other fields have been locating to
Kobe (More than 150 enterprises from Japan and abroad), and approximately
two thousand people are engaged in full-fledged research and development
in these fields. Designated by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports,
Science and Technology as the Intellectual Cluster Formation Project, and
designated by the Osaka prefectural government as an Urban Renaissance
Project in conjunction with the northern part of Osaka, these activities
have been promoted as national projects. |
This project does not
merely aim to establish Kobe as a focal point of the medical industry.
In bridging the gap between basic research and clinical applications
and industrialization, it also aims to upgrade existing industries,
secure employment, revitalize the economy of Kobe, improve medical
service standards and public health and welfare, and to contribute to
international society by promoting medical technologies in Asian
nations.
